Catch all of the Doctor’s amazing adventures in the complete collection of the hugely popular fifth series, featuring all episodes from the show as well as a wealth of fantastic extras and specially commissioned content. Introducing Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, Series 5 is jam packed with new characters as well some familiar but formidable monsters. After his explosive regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor awakes to discover his TARDIS is about to crash. Emerging from the wreckage of his crashed time machine, he meets young Amy Pond. Still wearing the remains of the Tenth Doctor’s suit, ripped and raggedy from the damage after the TARDIS control room exploded, the Doctor promises to take Amy to the stars. But before they can begin their journey, they become embroiled in an alien plot that could destroy the Earth. Later the Doctor makes good his promise and Amy boards the regenerated TARDIS, ready to take to the stars on a series of wild adventures that will change her life. Amy and the Doctor explore time and space, visiting 17th century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space. As always, wherever the Doctor goes, his oldest enemies are never far behind - the Daleks are hatching a new master plan from the heart of war-torn London in the 1940s. But they are not the only strange creatures the Doctor and Amy must face - there are also alien vampires, humanoid reptiles, old enemies such as the Weeping Angels, and a silent menace that follows Amy and the Doctor around wherever they go. Starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, this exciting new series also guest stars a wealth of British acting talent including James Corden (Gavin & Stacey), Alex Kingston (ER), Daisy Haggard (Man Stroke Woman), Bill Nighy (State of Play) and Tony Curran (24) Extras: Meanwhile in the TARDIS - Newly filmed scenes written by Steven Moffat, exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray, telling what happens between the episodes Doctor Who Confidential - An inside look at each episode Monster Files - Get under the skin and inside the minds of the new Doctor’s most challenging opponents In-Vision Commentaries Outtakes Video Diaries Episodes Comprise: 1. According to even the most conservative estimates, China will overtake the United States as the world's largest economy by 2027 and will ascend to the position of world economic leader by 2050. But the full repercussions of China's ascendancy - for itself and the rest of the globe - have been surprisingly little explained or understood. In this far-reaching and original investigation, Martin Jacques offers provocative answers to some of the most pressing questions about China's growing place on the world stage. Martin Jacques reveals, by elaborating on three historical truths, how China will seek to shape the world in its own image. The Chinese have a rich and long history as a civilization-state. Under the tributary system, outlying states paid tribute to the Middle Kingdom. Ninety-four percent of the population still believes they are one race - "Han Chinese." The strong sense of superiority rooted in China's history promises to resurface in 21st century China and in the process strengthen and further unify the country. A culturally self-confident Asian giant with a billion-plus population, China will likely resist globalization as we know it. This exceptionalism will have powerful ramifications for the rest of the world and the United States in particular. As China is already emerging as the new center of the East Asian economy, the mantle of economic and, therefore, cultural relevance will in our lifetimes begin to pass from Manhattan and Paris to cities like Beijing and Shanghai. It is the American relationship with and attitude toward China, Jacques argues, that will determine whether the 21st century will be relatively peaceful or fraught with tension, instability, and danger. When China Rules the World is the first book to fully conceive of and explain the upheaval that China's ascendance will cause and the realigned global power structure it will create. 1. For the Palestinians who live in the narrow coastal strip of Gaza, the Israeli invasion of December 2008 was a nightmare of unimaginable proportions: In the 22-day-long action, 1,400 Gazans were killed, several hundred on the first day alone. And yet, while nothing should diminish Palestinian suffering through those frightful days, it is possible something redemptive is emerging from the tragedy of Gaza. For, as Norman Finkelstein details, in a concise work that melds cold anger with cool analysis, the profound injustice of the Israeli assault was widely recognized by bodies that it is impossible to brand as partial or extremist. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the UN investigation headed by Richard Goldstone, in documenting Israel's use of indiscriminate and intentional force against the civilian population during the invasion (100 Palestinians died for every one Israeli), have had an impact on longstanding support for Israel. Jews in both the Unites States and the United Kingdom, for instance, have begun to voice dissent, and this trend is especially apparent among the young. Such a shift, Finkelstein contends, can create new pressure capable of moving the Middle East crisis towards a solution, one that embraces justice for Palestinians and Israelis alike. This edition has been revised throughout and includes an extensive afterword on the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which resulted in the deaths of nine activists and further strained the loyalty of many of Israel's traditional allies around the world. It also contains a brand new appendix in which Finkelstein dissects the official Israeli investigation of the flotilla attack. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Pile.
